The Ripple Effect: The lasting impact of teachers’ efforts in seemingly small moments outside the classroom
After college, Greg spent a year as a substitute teacher. One year turned into seven. Along the way, he started a mentoring program and a foundation. For his efforts, he has received honors like the Jefferson Award for Public Service and has been featured by media like Education Week and Good Morning America. The book, The First Thirty, looks at Greg’s efforts to help students beyond the classroom. It also looks back at his own experiences as a student and the people who sparked his desire to make a difference. It was NSDLC Multicultural Relations Book of the Year. His website is www.GregForbes.com

Six Central College Education students spent a week of their winter break teaching with faculty members in local k-12 schools in Puerto Rico. Part of the faculty members’ research through a campus Moore Foundation Grant, students engaged in the local culture, spent several days teaching in the schools, and even enjoyed some time at the beach! The two faculty members, Dr. Katie Gaebel, and Dr. Jennifer Diers, are researching pre-service teachers dispositions as a result of a short-term educational trip.
Education students at Central College are encouraged to immerse themselves in the field of education.
Whether it is through a short term faculty led trip to work in schools in Puerto Rico, through our Central Teacher Academy where students are paired with a local k-12 mentor teacher for three years of hands on experience in the classroom, involvement in a short term educational and development focused mission trip to Sierra Leone, Africa, or via student teaching in Chicago, our students truly immerse in education!
Central College Education students have embarked on some incredible experiences this past year!
