Central College Welcomes Works of Running, Kaufman to Mills Gallery

Central College is currently featuring the work of artists Lee Emma Running and Andrew Kaufman from Nov. 20 to Dec. 13 in the Mills Gallery in the Lubbers Center for the Visual Arts. The title of the exhibit is “Time and Place,” ideas featured prominently in both artists’ work.

Running’s work, as described in her artists biography, “embraces the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Guided by simple material investigations, her sculptures, installations and drawings are deeply connected to place.”

Kaufman describes his work as “a direct reflection of my own observations and experience within society. Collecting these, I translate them into contemplative visual and experimental art.”

Both artists do conceptually driven and experimental work, selecting media that helps convey feelings and ideas. The work in the exhibit features large hand-made paper works, video art, photography, and ink works.

Both artists work at Grinnell College. Running is Professor and Chair of the Studio Art Department; Kaufman serves as the Department Chair of Art and Art History.

“I love displaying Kaufman’s and Runnings works together because it gives the viewer a chance to juxtapose the work.” says Joe Hoksbergen, director of the Mills Gallery. “These artists experiment in such different directions!  For example, while both artists feature plants, Kaufman, uses the plant as a starting point, pulling it out of its natural origin and manipulating it with artificial -often digital- tools. Running’s work, on the other hand, stays in the natural realm, savoring the richness of fibrous textures and earthy colors.”

The public is invited to an artist talk and reception in the gallery at 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2. The Mills Gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
