Howard Paine: Into the Fading

February 7, 2023

The work of Howard Paine is exhibited in the Mills Gallery from January 23 – February 24.  His exhibition of woodcut, lithograph, and digital prints is titled Into the Fading.  An artist’s reception will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, February 23 in the Mills Gallery.  Paine’s large-scale digital prints are part of a series of works inspired by a trip to Beihai, China in May 2019. The literal landscape combined with physical and cultural distance were conceptual starting points for these works.  His reduction woodcuts are part of an ongoing series. These images consider ideas of mortality, memory, and the physical body that is left at the end of life. Botanical and insect forms act as proxies about the passing from life to death and what remains.

Howard Paine is an Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and is the Head of the Printmaking area. He earned an MFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St. Louis, and a BA in Studio Art and American Studies from Grinnell College. He has been integrating digital imaging and traditional printmaking processes for 25 years. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He lives and works in Omaha Nebraska with his wife Teresa and dogs Truman and Akira.
