What do students have to say about the impact of TRIO Upward Bound at Central College?
Class of 2025 graduate:
My participation in TRIO programs, including TRIO Talent Search and Upward Bound, has been foundational to my academic and personal success. As a first-generation student from an immigrant, single-parent household, TRIO provided the guidance, mentorship, and support that made higher education feel possible.
Through TRIO, I developed leadership, confidence, and self-advocacy skills that led me to serve as an FFA officer and a two-time Student Advisory Board leader. These experiences prepared me for college-level expectations and helped shape my commitment to serving others. I am pursuing higher education in animal science on a pre-veterinary track, with a focus on agriculture, sustainability, and community impact.
Class of 2024 graduate:
Upward Bound is a community and support that has helped me continue my education and grow into the person I am today. Although I am no longer in Upward Bound, I still feel like that connection is still there. Throughout my journey in Upward Bound I have always felt welcomed and seen by the staff and peers. Upward Bound has helped me and many other students branch out and be more confident. Because of Upward Bound I am now continuing my education which will help me become the first person in my family to earn a college degree. Upward Bound has been a huge part of my life. When applying I never thought it would be a place where there are many people who are also interested in continuing there education. Upward Bound has been there for me and my family. Even though I am no longer in Upward Bound, my siblings are still continuing through the program to one day graduate and also attend a university. I am forever grateful for Upward Bound TRIO and for the future of what’s yet to come.
Class of 2021 graduate:
Upward Bound played a huge contribution to my success in high school and getting to college. Having a community and family that actively supported me made going to college obtainable. Spending each summer in Pella allowed me to be prepared for what college would be like. I learned how to properly manage my time, communicate with professors, keep a schedule, and balance my social life. Getting guidance through the application process helped tremendously. Having a team that understands the ins and outs of applying to college made the journey clear and less daunting. Upward Bound had a immense impact on my life, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.
Class of 2025 graduate:
Helped me grow while being comfortable and showed me what’s it like to be in a college setting. Help me know that college is the path for me. Helped improve my leadership, social and public speaking skills. Overall, just a place of growth encouraging students to think beyond what they are capable of.
